January Tips

  • Garden tools can be repaired and serviced
  • Clean patios, paths and decking areas of moss and dirt
  • Order begonia tubers and lily bulbs and pot them up
  • Give wisteria its first pruning of the year
  • Water container plants sparingly

February Tips

  • Prune roses towards the end of the month in milder areas
  • Mist house plants to prevent drying up in central heating
  • Treat fences and trellis with wood preservative if needed
  • Warm ground for sowing with polythene or cloches
  • Buy seeds

March Tips

  • Feed all plants with a general slow-release fertiliser
  • Mulch borders while the ground is damp and weed free
  • Renovate lawns - sow grass, seed on bare patches, repair and level hollows, bumps and broken edges
  • Greenhouse vegetables can be sown
  • Prune winter-flowering jasmine once it has finished flowering

April Tips

  • Start mowing lawns regularly
  • Plant up hanging baskets and containers, but keep frost-free
  • Support herbaceous perennials with stakes
  • Tender vegetables like marrow and runner beans can be sown in pots and placed under cover
  • Water lilies in ponds can be lifted and divided

May Tips

  • Spray roses to prevent blackspot
  • Plant herbs
  • Feed fish daily, tackle blanket weed and make sure the pond is well planted
  • Water new plants, especially during dry spells
  • Feed strawberries with liquid tomato fertiliser

June Tips

  • Fix a water butt to collect soft water for your plants
  • Deadhead flowers frequently to encourage longer show
  • Prune shrubs that have finished flowering
  • Feed container plants
  • Weed regularly
  • Tender flowers and vegetables can now be planted outside

 

July Tips

  • Water daily, especially hanging baskets and containers
  • Tie-in fast growing climbers
  • Top up the pond regularly
  • Keep deadheading flowers
  • Trim conifer hedges
  • Cut lavender for drying
  • Sow tender salads like lettuce, for quick cropping

August Tips

  • Keep fountain/pump running to oxygenate the water for the fish, and check water level
  • Prune rambler roses when they finish flowering
  • Keep greenhouse well ventilated
  • Pinch out growing tips of tomatoes and fuchsia
  • Plant autumn flowering bulbs
  • Keep watering

September Tips

  • Hardy annuals can be sown in trays for early next spring
  • Rake up fallen leaves and collect in bags to make leaf mould
  • Prune rambling roses
  • Harvest fruit as it ripens
  • Lawns mown less frequently now
  • Plant daffodil and crocus bulbs in containers

October Tips

  • Continue to sweep up fallen leaves for compost
  • Lift bulbs and tubers that need overwintering indoors
  • Clear away the summer bedding plants
  • Clean and tidy up the greenhouse thoroughly

November Tips

  • Check lawns for water-logged areas and make a note to improve drainage next spring
  • Plant winter-flowering pansies
  • Clean and disinfect pots and trays ready for next spring
  • Protect newly planted and delicate shrubs
  • Hard prune deciduous hedges which have been overgrown
  • Tidy up the perennial borders by cutting back the dead stems

December Tips

  • Check that tree stakes are secure to stop chafing of trunks
  • Firm down soil around newly planted shrubs lifted by frost
  • Dig over soil in the vegetable plot if weather permits
  • Use windbreak netting on new conifers in exposed conditions
  • Test water pumps in ponds fortnightly to stop seizing up
  • Feed the birds regularly
